EIPS TRUSTEE SEUTTER RESIGNS
EIPS Trustee Seutter resigns. The size of Elk Island Public School’s Board of Trustees has shrunk. On Nov. 30, EIPS trustee Jim Seutter resigned for his position because he was relocating outside of the ward — Strathcona County Ward Electoral Subdivision #4, which comprised of municipal lands south of secondary Highway 630 (Wye Road). He provided his official letter of resignation on Nov. 3. In response, the public school division said Strathcona County Ward Electoral Subdivision #4 residents will be represented by the remainder of the EIPS board until the next municipal election, which is set for October 2025. The cost of holding a by-election would have been $40,000. “As outlined in the Education Act Section 81(2), a by-election need not be held during the three-year period immediately following a general election if there is only one vacancy on the board,” EIPS said in a release. Seutter was in his third term and was first elected as an EIPS trustee in 2013. When re-elected on Oct. 21, 2021, he stated that trustees had plenty of work ahead as COVID-19 created many learning gaps, more lobbying was required to review and delay the implementation of the K-6 Curriculum, and the division needed to right-size its facilities and re-elevate its attendance boundaries in Sherwood Park and rural areas. “It is a great honour and privilege to serve the students and families as trustee for my third term,” Seutter had said in October 2021. Before his time as trustee, he taught at Fultonvale School and Ministik for three years, Clover Bar Junior High for five years, and Strathcona Christian Secondary for 33 years. He received the Garfield Weston Outstanding Principal’s Award from the Fraser Institute in 2000 and was granted an Excellence in Teaching Award as a principal in 2013. As approved at the November EIPS Board meeting, board vice-chair Susan Miller will be the new representative for Fultonvale Elementary Junior High School, trustee Don Irwin will be the new representative for Lakeland Ridge School, and board chair Cathy Allen will represent Strathcona Christian Academy Elementary School. In addition, Seutter’s board committee lists and Acting Chair schedule was resigned to other trustees. lmorey@postmedia.com
